I've filed a new issue on Codeberg.

Caution: Don't copy URLs from here! I had to add zero-width spaces to keep Hubzilla from rendering part of them as emojis. Copy them from Codeberg.

The streams repository has undergone a big change with the release of version 24.07.20: It has introduced nomadic ActivityPub content on channels that belong to accounts created on the new version.

Such channels can be identified by the new URL format introduced for content such as posts.

/.well-known/apgateway/did:key:/item/

However, such channels work a whole lot differently from channels on older accounts. And Hubzilla has big problems receiving content from such channels.

For example, it is impossible to send posts from a channel on a new (streams) account to Hubzilla.

Steps to reproduce:

Have a channel on (streams) on an account that was created on version 24.07.20 or later in addition to your Hubzilla channel.
Establish a bidirectional connection between both channels.
Send a post from (streams).
Check the delivery report on (streams).
Check your Hubzilla stream.
Re-check both after a few hours or days.

Expected and desired outcome:

Your Hubzilla stream receives the post.
The delivery report on (streams) says the post was sent.

Actual outcome:

Your Hubzilla stream does not receive the post.
The delivery report on (streams) says the post is queued.

Manually importing posts from channels on newer (streams) accounts doesn't work either.

Steps to reproduce:

Copy the URL of my (streams) introduction post (https://streams.elsmussols.net/.well-known/apgateway/did:key:z6Mkmc3YmgUu5jTyhc6YqC8VjnMwmFtdjFFA45MHTqyBFaA2/item/acd93040-0c7b-41b0-b9b4-4048dadc29e3).
Paste it into Hubzilla's search.
Start the search.

Expected and desired outcome:

Hubzilla successfully imports the post, including my channel name and my profile picture.

Actual outcome:

The search keeps running indefinitely with no result.

Cutting down the URL to only the item works only halfway.

Steps to reproduce:

Copy the URL of my (streams) introduction post, reduced to what Hubzilla is familiar with (https://streams.elsmussols.net/item/acd93040-0c7b-41b0-b9b4-4048dadc29e3).
Paste it into Hubzilla's search.
Start the search.

Expected and desired outcome:

Hubzilla successfully imports the post, including my channel name and my profile picture.

Actual outcome:

Hubzilla finds and imports the post, but with no channel name ("(null)") and a placeholder for the completely missing profile picture. "View profile" will take you to my (streams) channel, but Hubzilla is unable to import any information from it.

Fascinating thread about death of zot.
Remember Mr Macgirvin did announce his intention to bring his nomadic identity to activitypub (if memory is correct, with correct forecast of spam in mastodon). We now see the same spam arrival in hubzilla, again due to dubious decisions.

With these strategic decisions, there does not seem to be much value to use hubzilla.

If you look at it from your Hubzilla-rejecting ideology, then that may be true. However, if you read what was written, it just means that Mike wants to switch the (streams) platform from Zot/Nomad to AP. So far I have not heard this from Hubzilla.

So: Zot is not dead, but Zot is being retired at (streams) because they want to switch to AP. Hubzilla continues to work with Zot (and I think it will stay that way because many functionalities are difficult to realise with AP... Features that cannot be realised with (streams) because they are not available there).

A personal reason to value hubzilla was ability to communicate across most wide parts of fediverse.

With nomadic identity in activitypub, the future of hubzilla seems to be small; there are many more programmers involved in other parts of fediverse, than hubzilla. There may be a few more nerds to join hubzilla (curiosity?), but there are too many bugs, poor documentation, confusion in ux/ui for the real world to use it. If not wrong, there are no new software services that have joined zot?

It will be interesting to see which functions in hubzilla are difficult to replicate elsewhere in fediverse.

And seriously, if all you want to do is rant about Hubzilla, how bad it is, how bad the development team is, that Zot is no good and Hubzilla makes everything bad, then you're really in the wrong place. Why don't you build your own blog and write as many articles as you like about the lousy state of Hubzilla, but don't poison the atmosphere here. In the meantime, my patience has really run out when nothing constructive comes and no answer is given to any specific question, so that you CAN'T be helped with your problems and only negative sentiment is spread (without any proof of the supposed reasons for this).

That's mostly because nobody knows that Zot exists.

Those few who do and who know how to develop a Fediverse server app probably saw no sense in developing something else natively based on Zot. ActivityPub is more wide-spread and allows your software to connect to much more stuff than Zot.

Besides, there's little that Hubzilla can't do that'd require something entirely else. And unlike the Fediverse's "Let's clone with ActivityPub", there has never been a "Let's clone with Zot" fad.

Used to have.

AFAIK, Friendica has fully switched from DFRN to ActivityPub. I guess it must have happened last year.

I've heard that again and again. So how do you explain this (on a Friendica instance with version 2024.06-rc)?

And I can't find a corresponding entry in the changelog.

Is that really the case? At least there is no official announcement stating that DFRN has been removed and that Friendica now only works with AP. The focus has merely been placed on AP.

Lack of promotion is a regret, because hubzilla provided some good functionality.

It would be nice to know if there are interoperable data transfer services, so that users can save their account data to use with other/new services as they become available. Maybe some sort of combination of friendica/hubzilla/solid (#^https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_(web_decentralization_project))
